The purpose of this paper is to outline nursing education and explain how it applies to the promotion of safe, quality patient care. Liberal education, knowledge from a variety of disciplines, and the integration of ways of knowing and thinking in nursing influence scholarship and the ways in which students will be able to respond in real life situations. This is where nurses can take their scholarship and apply it in complex adaptive ways. Knowledge of a discipline will enable students to make a steady transition from their school life into the professional world of nursing. All of these patterns are synthesized as soon as a nurse walks into an exam room. Empirics or empirical science is that of which is gained from a textbook and lacking “abstract and systematic explanations,” (Carper, 1978). It is viewed more of knowledge that can be integrated into abstract thinking but does not exhibit those characteristics by itself (Carper, 1978). Esthetics is the art of nursing that expresses an imitating learning style but it can also be how the nurse integrates her own creativity and style to provide quality of care (Carper, 1978 and Orem, 1971). Personal knowledge are the experiences a nurse or nursing student come into the situation with. Liberal education allows the student to take what they know and apply it to non-linear problems such as those dealing with culture. Knowledge of a discipline is based on concepts that will allow students to grow independently once out of school and in the hospital as a registered nurse.
