The underlying thematic issue presented is the question of the extent to which biologically inherent human potential determines the true potential of a person. Perhaps the most controversial issue in Gattaca is the use of genetic engineering technology in humans and pre-natal selection. When the film was released in 1997, the concepts of genetic manipulation seemed to be just science fiction. With today’s advances in genetics, the world could be faced with the legal dilemma of regulation of genetic changes and how to combat genetic bias in the workplace. The film “Gattaca” brings to balance the issue of human determination, destiny and genetic engineering.
