As civil rights began to reach a breaking point and the Cold War was in full swing, Kennedy knew his time in office would not be an easy one. On September 12, 1962, at his "Address at Rice University on the Nation 's Space Effort", or better known as the "We choose to go to the moon" speech, Kennedy declared that America’s goal was to land on the moon. Although it was not stated politically, this speech was given in response to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics’ actions of launching a small satellite known as “Sputnik 1” into orbit. While not only feeling threatened by this new technology, America felt like the USSR was beating them in a competition between nations, meanwhile the American mindset would not allow that to happen. This small incident caused Kennedy to promise that America would reach the moon before the end of the decade, which did happen, supposedly. Many conspiracy theories exist stating that America never reached the moon and that the whole occurrence was staged, but at the time, all of the evidence appeared legitimate and led millions to believe America beat Russia in what is known as the “Space Race”. Unfortunately, Kennedy was not alive to see this great feat due to being assassinated November 22, 1963. While there are also many conspiracies relating to his death, the prominent story states that Lee Harvey Oswald opposed Kennedy’s actions as president so he shot Kennedy twice from a warehouse as Kennedy rode in an open-top Lincoln Continental through Dallas,
