The chapter on Strategic and Operational Planning covers what skills are needed by the leader-manager to be successful in this type of planning. There are many forces that effect today 's health-care system including legal, political, economic, social, or ethical forces and planning properly is vital (Marquis, 2014, p 142). Strategic and Operational Planning involves being proactive to create a calculated plan that reduces risk and uncertainty, while encouraging unity of goals and directing attention to the objectives of the organizations (Marquis, 2014, p. 139). Some situations a leader-manager many find themselves in would include; a high percentage of the nursing staff retiring or an influx of a certain race or illness affecting your client population. With out proper planning the agency in which you work can be left at a disadvantage and can effect the quality of care for patients. Chapter nine discusses how to prioritize tasks, identifies common internal and external times wasters, explains how to deal with interruptions, and how to use a time inventory to increase self awareness of how you spend your time. Time management is apart of everyone 's daily life and if not done correctly one can become overwhelming which can lead to unachieved goals, so learning new time management strategies is always useful. I personally always liked making checklist, so I can view my progress and if I become distracted I can assess if I skipped anything. Upon learning new methods of time management from this chapter, I also learned how leaders can be role models to suburbanites demonstrated by how they manage their time and how managers need to use time resources wisely to promote productivity and reach goals (Marquis, 2014, p.
