I can tell that the author of the likes to use figurative language. The figurative language that Cynthia Rylant use personification in her book called In November she uses it quite alot like when she said ''that the birds looked serious, but birds really don't look serious she just gives the birds human qualities to go with the book, also Cythia is very descriptive in her…
Dekanawida vs. Jonathan Edwards To introduce the purpose of this essay bluntly, I will compare and contrast the similarities and differences in the figurative language used between “The Iroquois Constitution” and “Sinner's in the Hands of an Angry God”. First, I will begin by explaining how Dekanawida, author of the Iroquois Constitution, uses figurative language. Then, I will explain how Jonathan Edwards uses figurative language in his sermon.…
Wharton establishes patterns of imagery by using figurative language — language meant to be taken figuratively as well as literally. In Ethan Frome, Wharton's descriptive imagery is one of the most important features of her simple and efficient prose style. Her descriptions serve a definite stylistic and structural purpose. The figurative language used by Wharton includes metaphors and similes. Metaphors compare two unlike things without using words of comparison.…
“People who are meant to be together find their way back. They may take a few detours, but they’re never lost” --Anonymous The worst time in history were the years of 1933-1945. A time where people were ashamed of their region and god. Authors Elie Wiesel, author of night, and Art Spiegelman, author of Maus, Write and share the true horrors of the holocaust and share people's stories. Looking at the qoute, powerful words fit right in with the way both authors use foreshadowing and figurative language to portray the theme of how tragic events brings family closer.…
Mr. Vonnegut, After thoroughly analyzing and metaphorically murdering your novel, Slaughterhouse Five, I have come to a much overdue conclusion that I think you 'll very much enjoy. Your use of figurative language has captured my heart in a way that no one else could. I adore Billy 's incredible personality, I strongly dislike the German soldiers that imprisoned all of your characters and the people who wanted to murder Billy. I feel empathetic for Billy 's first wife, Valencia since Billy met Montana and dies in a plane crash. However, Mr. Vonnegut, you have truly and utterly wrecked me.…
One major form of figurative language used to do this is imagery. Taya uses imagery constantly throughout the novel. “I knew the overall look I wanted: sleek and elegant. I found something online I liked then found a place where similar dresses were sold.…
I chose a few key types of figurative language which I think show major points of the book and the messages they are trying to get across. First is Foreshadowing which I think is a key tool to get points across in the book because it pits readers on edge no questioning what is going to happen just as the characters would. The example of foreshadowing is a big look into the future but also put the reader on edge and want to read more in the book "She was howling, pointing through the window: ' Look! Look at this fire! The terrible fire!…
“ . “When he looked down to face the boy the room swam before his eyes,” this would be an example of personification that occurs in the climax of the story. “He noticed the two Second World War medal ribbons on the man's left breast, and knew the scoutmaster had never left the country.” This would be an example of symbolism, they are symbolizing the ribbons to never leaving a country. “Smell of hymnbooks and varnish that carried him back to his choir-boy days.”…
It was noticed that tolkien used more metaphors than other forms of figurative language. On page 83 he wrote "As suspiscion grew in Gollum's mind, the light of his eyes burned with a pale flame." Here he used very illustrious writing just to convey the fact that Gollum was fuming, due to Bilbo taking the ring. On the next paragraph Tolkien wrote"the light in Gollums eyes had become a green fire," to show how enraged he was for his "prescious" being taken. The author used very memorable words to make his use of metaphors and other types of figurative language special to this…
Another example of figurative language is symbolism. Finally, allusions, a brief and indirect reference to a person, place, thing or idea of historical, cultural, literary or political significance. Overall Sonny and his brother become united in the end with a realization that the distance…
The right words The stone lion (Wild and Voutila, 2014) begins and ends with the lion being a statue in front of the library. The journey taken through the beginning and the end of the story allow the readers to feel, dream, imagine and think about feelings of the lion and the feelings that he encounters. Margaret Wild and Rita Voutila allow the readers to embark on the same journey through the use of emotive language and pictures throughout the story. Humans are able to gain the information though the use of their senses, sight and sound (Tunnell, 2008).…
Spoken word poetry is a form of poetry that the author gives life to through voice inflections and word play. In Shane Koyczan’s spoken word piece “To This Day”, Shane uses vivid mental imagery and particular emphasis to bring attention to bullying and mental illnesses. Through the telling of people's struggles he teaches he readers that it is possible to survive mental illnesses no matter the stigma put on you because of them, and that we all need to work together to spread the word and help the victims. For most people, working with loud noises is the best way to get attention, but for Shane, working with both noise and silence is more impactful.…
Once more to the Lake, by E.B. white, is a personal narrative that allows the readers to slip into the shoes of E.B. White and relive the memories he had with a lake in Maine. This personal narrative theme is more illusive, going back in time where E.B. White lived in delight as a kid who visited a same lake each summer. E.B White reflects his childhood memories when he took his son to the same lake that he grew to love. These reflections and memories are both pleasurable and saddening as he realizes nothing has changed. E.B. White uses figurative language that allows him to express his feelings as he relives the memories he once had as a child.…
Figurative language is the use of words in a non-literal sense. One example of figurative language is simile; a simile is a comparison of two unlike things using like or as to give an added meaning to one of them. The next quote has one form of simile. “In his blue gardens, men and women came and went like moths among the whispering and the champagne and the stars” (39). In this simile Fitzgerald uses like to compare the men and women to the moths that float through the garden at night at Gatsby’s party.…
