(a) Describe an event that occurred during the group meeting.
The meeting started with the traditional “check-in” process. The group facilitator asked each member to describe how they were feeling and what issues they would like to talk about. The group leader also asked group members to summarize the previous session and share their reflections about the topics we discussed the week before. As at the previous meeting, the group focused mainly on spontaneous sharing, and the discussed topics (religion, spirituality) emerged from here-and-now interactions between the members. The participants also talked about different ways of improving time management and strategies to fight with procrastination.
(b) Inferences: Speculate on possible explanations for each event’s occurrence. Why do you think group members did that? Provide your own insights.
As usual, the group members listened respectfully, were attentive to speakers, and willing to share their opinions about the discussed topics. In my opinion, the participants felt safe and comfortable enough (strong cohesion) to share their beliefs, even if they were quite different from others. I think this conversation strengthened the bond between the members who had similar beliefs, but also increased the acceptance of participants who had different spiritual/religious convictions. It was also evidenced by the use of humor. Corey and Corey (2006) claim that “Laughter and humor can draw everyone in the group closer. Humor often puts problems in a new light, and it sets a tone in a group indicating that work occur in a context of fun. The power of humor as a therapeutic tool is often underrated”. (p.
