The novel Frankenstein was written by Mary Shelley when she was 18 years old. The first edition of the novel was published anonymously in London in 1818, when she was 20. Shelley’s name first appeared on the second edition, published in France in 1823. Victor Frankenstein is a scientist that masters all that his professors have to teach him and becomes fascinated with the human body and creates a hideous monster. His creation lead to many of his loved ones death and still tells no one of the monster he has created. Victor become mad and seeks revenge on the monster. Victor is ill from several possible mental illnesses including depression, bipolar disorder, and narcissism.
Victor Frankenstein suffers from depression and is expressed throughout many parts of the story. Symptoms of depression include: Persistent sad, anxious or “empty” mood. Feeling of hopelessness, pessimism. Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness(Chapter #4: How Is Depression Diagnosed?). “You may deem me romantic, my dear sister, but I bitterly feel the want of a friend” (Shelley 5).
