The objective of this assignment is to determine why and how a health professional would need to explain illness/injury differently to a child than an adult. This will help the reader to understand why injury and illness need to be explained differently to children as they will have a better understanding of how little children can comprehend compared to an adult. I will also be explaining Piaget’s Theory and Bibace and Walsh’s Theory to further explain child development. I will use Piaget’s Theory to introduce the stages of child development, which will be discussed in the following paragraph.
Paragraph 2: Outline stages of child development
At each stage of development, children have different levels of understanding when it comes to their conception of death. Terminology, phrases, forms of communication, amount of physical contact and depth of information will vary between stages according to what children would require to assist with processing the information (Symons-Bradbury 2004).
• Sensorimotor (0-2 years) – does not understand the conception of death because they are yet to understand object permanence, etc.
• Preoperational (2-6 years) – has learnt language and how to communicate to some extent, but does not yet comprehend the mental operations of concrete
