Do you know why we have the independant nation we have today? There are many reasons and events that led to what we call the Revolutionary War. These were : The Navigation Acts, the French and Indian War, Pontiac’s Rebellion and the Proclamation of 1763, the Sugar Act, the Stamp Act, Declaratory Act, the Townshend Act, the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, and the Intolerable Acts. These are the taxes and regulations that the British placed on the colonists. Soon, the colonists will become angry and feel that these are costing them their rights and opportunities. Charles Townshend was the Chancellor of the Exchequer who introduced a series of measures, soon to be called the Townshend Acts, to the British Parliament. The act taxed imported items such as glass, lead, paint, and tea. Parliament passed the first act in 1767 hoping that it would pay for colonial expenses. Colonists considered that the taxes abused their rights and decided to boycott the items that had taxes. Parliament repealed the Townshend Act in 1770 due to a conflict in Boston. Even though, the Townshend Act was invalidated, they kept the tax on the tea, which will later spark another conflict. However, before that happens, their is the Boston Massacre.Paragraph #9 The Boston Massacre Can you imagine having a chunk of ice thrown at you or being hit with a wooden club? The Boston Massacre was an incident where a group of colonists insulted British soldiers. It started with throwing snowballs but quickly, led to throwing ice and clubs at the soldiers. After an accidental shot goes off the soldiers fire into the the crowd of colonists killing five people. Three colonists die instantly and the other two die later because of their wounds. Colonists are enraged and take the British soldiers to trial. John Adams decided to defend them in support of the colonial justice system.
