Emotions and feelings are crucial to express a person’s individuality. In the society in the book, the people are hollow and shallow, as if they are wearing masks. Their society took away all emotions except happiness. As a result, there are no real emotions. When Clarisse asks Montag if he is happy, he is unable to answer (pg.7). At first he replies, “Am I what? … Happy! Of all the nonsense.” because thats what the government wants him to feel, (pg. 8). For example, Millie and others attempt suicide because they are not truly happy. After Millie overdosed her sleeping pills, she would have died if Montag had not realized on time (11-12). People in our society, like in the other society, have the pressure to fit in so they hide their true emotions. The only character that doesn’t mask her emotions is Clarisse when she asks Montag about love. She thinks that “if [the dandelion] rubs off, it means I’m in love,” (pg.13). The dandelion theory might not have been real, but Montag didn’t really love Millie because when they were separated at the end of the novel, he didn’t feel any kind of sadness. Personal growth allows people to grow in their own way and experience new things. Our society is the opposite to theirs because we allow everyone a choice to show their emotions.
