A student nurse interviewed a twenty-six year old mother and twenty-seven year old father; first time parents of a healthy, full term baby boy. The mother has no significant health history with the exception of Herpes Simplex Virus, which she was adequately treated for with antiviral medication. The maternal grandmother has a history of breast cancer and cervical cancer, while the maternal grandfather has a history of type I diabetes. The father has no significant health history. A history of high cholesterol and acid reflex comes from paternal grandmother as well as a history of cardiac arrest from the paternal grandfather. With this knowledge, the student nurse created questions to ask the new parents that pertained to their family status and dynamics.

Over the past twenty-four hours the mother was using hand expression, following her baby’s feeding cues and working to achieve a deep latch. Despite all efforts, their son would not latch well with a score of six out of ten. With the help of a lactation consultant, the mother and father discovered their son has a tight frenulum and the mother nipples are short shafted or flat. The parents were reassured to hear that they were not doing anything wrong and there were other medical reasons why breastfeeding was not going as planned. The mother was very emotional and shared with her husband and student nurse that she felt like a terrible mother due to not being able to adequately supply milk for her baby boy. With sympathy and much needed support from her husband and the student nurse, the mother’s attitude became cheerful and
