Bowen’s Family Systems theory (BFST) attempts to explain human behavior as it relates to family dynamics and its complex interconnections. Reading Genesis chapters one through four, I identified four of eight BFST concepts that can be applied to “The First Family”: (a) triangles concept, (b) nuclear family concept, (c) emotional cutoff, and (d) sibling position. According to BFST, the triangle concept refers to three individuals that are in some way connected to each other, be it biological family or not, as this concept can apply to any relationship, and the triad can be extensive. Additionally, according to the theory, dyad is weak to withstand stress on its own and thus having at least three individuals in the family makes it stronger. We…
An important capability of this theory is to focus on the family’s interactions and roles that they individually paly. They must each recognize that each person in a situation is viewing things form his or her own perspective and acting with the hope of influencing the outcome of the interaction. This family as a whole should study one another and be reminded that they are human beings that are not perfect. Even though, Mr. Wells may seem as if he is an alcoholic in their eyes they should know that it can be fixed. 12-step rehab program is recommended for Mr. Well to reduce some stress and to release his alcohol habit.…
Many people have suprasystems and subsystems in their lives. Suprasystems are external groups in which families are involved, such as the community, church, neighbors and close friends. T and C are very limited in their suprasystems. Family are people that are supposed to be your support system and the people you rely on. We find going to church is really helpful for many people, however, T does not go to church or believe in God.…
Murray Bowen (1913–90). It is a theory backed up by a growing body of empirical research.1 In recent years Bowen’s concept of ‘differentiation of self’ — which describes differing levels of maturity in relationships — has been shown by researchers to be related to important areas of well-being, including marital satisfaction, and the capacity to handle stress, make decisions and manage social anxiety (The Family Systems Institute). The theoretical of approach to psychanalytic family theory is my choice because Bowen looks at the originally trained in Freud’s psychoanalysis but departed from this theory as he observed that human difficulties went beyond unresolved issues in the individual’s psyche and were, rather, embedded in each person’s family system — the focus of this book on relationship systems.…
We can draw habits and patterns from behavior that already exists within the family’s setting. It 's safe to say that the problem of the family is a symptom of how the family functions on a daily basis, not just a symptom of societal adjustment, history within the family, or mental development. Looking at the perspective that the theory lays out for us we can assume that the problem behavior can serve a purpose in the family, can be unintentionally maintain by the processes in the family, and can be a function of how the family can’t operate productively, or can be a result of dysfunctional patterns handed down across generations. (Corey, 2013,…

Family Theory Assessments and Application of Family Interventions According to the Family Theory, each part of a system is interrelated, dependent on each other, and affects one another (Codina Leik, 2014). Therefore, if one part of the system is damaged or dysfunctional, such as one member of a family, the rest of the system or family is also affected (Codina Leik, 2014). It is extremely important to incorporate this theory into assessments and family interventions in primary care. Both of my preceptors incorporated this system into their assessments and care.…
As a CCLS we take on a code of ethical responsibilities to provide psychosocial care to infants, children, youth, and families regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, economic status, values, nationality, or disability. To be a quality care provider one must be aware of their personal biases and be able to leave them at the door, thus to not allow these biases or personal beliefs to interfere with the quality of care provided to every patient and family. A major role of a CCLS is to serve as an advocate in the hospital setting and in the transition back to school. As a CCLS we may encounter children and parents in the LGBTQ community.…
Family Systems Families are systems that have created their own strategies on how they deal with tasks on a daily bases. They are the people who “have shared a sense of history, share emotional ties to one another, and devise strategies for meeting the needs of individual family members and the group as a whole” (Anderson and Sabatelli 2010:6). A family’s historical background, ethnicity, culture and religion can all contribute to its uniqueness from other families.…
When it comes to the final project our group decided to focus on family systems therapy. We decided that this would be an interesting form of therapy to look into also was nice that it is one that we learned about at the end of the semester. When it comes to family systems therapy the idea is that the family is seen as a whole unit and when something effects one person in the unit it actually effects all members of that unit. When looking at one person in that unit the best way to understand them is by looking at interactions that individual shares with everyone else in the family unit. The main idea of family systems therapy is that the symptoms are seen as a manifestation of dysfunction in the family unit.…
What’s family? Family is a socially recognized group that forms an emotional connection and serves as economic unit in society. There are many types of family, whether kin by blood, marriage, cohabitation or adoption. Sociology identifies family types based on family orientation or family procreation. Also, in families there are several type of marriages such as single parenting where a male or female is the only individual taking care of the child(ren).…
Throughout the Walsh text, several theories of social work practice are identified and explained. I will compare and contrast Family Emotional Systems Theory and Structural Family Theory. This paper will discuss the main concepts of each theory. How the theories would be utilized within different individuals and issues that may be presented as a social worker. The usefulness of each of the two theories in regards to social work practice, concentrating on a micro practice perspective.…
Systemic Analysis of the Family The first tool I chose for the Riverez family would be a Genogram. According to Genogram.org a genogram is a useful way to map relationships and family patterns for at least three generations. Family therapist use genograms to map relationships.…
The family systems theory is useful when working with families to better understand the structure and interaction within the family system and to determine what…
Family systems theory is a theory that is used to describe the family as a whole. When understanding this theory there are some key terms to remember. Wholeness, interdependence, homeostasis, boundaries, and hierarchy are all terms that describe family systems theory the best. This theory was expanded upon by Murray Bowen. Wholeness is defined as the sum of all parts (Herring, 2015).…
