The country has a current population of 206.1 million people, and a GDP of $2.346 trillion. Yet Brazil still faces the reality that almost 9% of its population is under the poverty line. Much of this large impoverished population reside in Favelas across the country. The population of these settlements is often made of low income families that do not have the means to afford legal housing and property who move from rural settlements. This trend has taken place for decades from the 1950s onwards. Since the 1950s the Brazilian government has continued to focus its financial investments towards the modernization and urbanization of the country. The increase in the economic development of the country in turn resulted in a large migration from rural communities, to the new desirable urban sprawls. Due to the combined financial investments of the government regarding urbanization, and the mass migrations to cities, approximately 82% of the population of Brazil now live in cities.
