The language and terminology used in the field of law are quite different from those that most of us are accustomed to using. In the rules of evidence, many terms have specific meanings that investigators must know and understand (Swanson et al., 2011). In the U.S., federal courts follow the Federal Rules of Evidence, while state courts generally follow their own rules. State rules of evidence are generally imposed by the state legislature upon the state courts.
