The original purpose of rape culture was to help society understand the incorrect approach to a subject as sensitive as rape. Rape culture, however, did not receive much attention until 2005. Before then, it was nothing more than an impractical idea in the back of people’s minds. Now, we have discovered how common the topic has become. Recently, however, the original intentions behind introducing rape culture to the public have been neglected. Rape culture has been stated as a “Lie.” The false data presented to the media by college campuses, corporations, and even the media we depend on are meddling with the public consciousness. It is sad to find out how flawed the data is due to people who see rape culture as a threat and consider the true statistics of sexual assault to be dangerous. This is especially the case in American college campuses. Rape statistics demonstrate that one in five women in college are sexually assaulted. Some studies insist that the “one in five” and “one in four” numbers are real, but they do not quite match up with reality. Upon doing more research, it is found that if one in every five American women are raped or sexually assaulted, the statistics would match up with those of some third world countries such as, Congo.
