The next verse in Colossians is “Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them” (NIV). These verses are arguing both male and female have a responsibility to treat each other fairly and to “love, to obey, and encourage, [and] to work hard” contradictory to some beliefs that the Bible is elevating men to a superior role (Zondervan, 1998, P. 2166). The Old Testament has a lot of verses that seem to elevate men to a more important role, but there are other instances such as God appointing a woman, Deborah, as a judge which was a powerful position. In my interpretation, taking in to account the context and culture of biblical principles, both men and woman are valued and important to God, both with important tasks and abilities. With the integration of Biblical principles and feminism therapy, woman can fight oppression they have in our society and learn to get their dignity and strength and worth from God, knowing that to God women are equal with men.
