After the King came the Vassals, who were the most powerful and most wealthy landowners including nobles and bishops. A Vassal was a person who received land from a lord and for that land he received a pledge of loyalty and services. The Vassal responsible was to answer to calls to military service on behalf of the lord. This security of military help was the primary reason the lord entered into the feudal relationship. The vassal sometimes had to fulfill other duties for the the lord. The vassal had to provide the lord with a group of people, so that if the lord faced a big decision, like whether or not he should go to war, he would get all his vassals and hold a council. Manors were created for the purpose of not only living but also too have a very nice property that could stand on its own. People were moving to huge amounts of land so they could grow everything they needed. The manor had mills, bakery, blacksmiths, churches, water wells, barns, many fields for peasants that worked on them and other fields that the kings had all to them selves. The manors were usually built on a very large piece of land. The lord, which was the owner of the manor had a very big house, sometimes a castle, sometimes just a regular house.
