Field Experience –EDU 562

Observation:
Journal two of the Westminster College class EDU 562 Field Experience was related to observation and participation with a first grade classroom, on Wednesday, January 6, 2016. This morning was a bit different, the teacher had not yet arrived in the classroom and the students began to enter the room. At that time the school Principal came into the classroom and informed that the teacher was out today with a sick daughter. The Principal advised that he would be staying in the classroom all day. The class selected penguins and polar bears as the animals they wanted to explore. This first week we started talking about penguins. I read a story about penguins and a fact book about them too. Once I was finished reading the book the student with the helper job, passed out coloring pages of penguins. The students had to use their fine and gross motor skills to color and cut out the parts of the penguins. As the students were coloring their penguins, we made copies of their math homework to do for next day. Once the students completed their penguin the Principle helped to write their names on the back of their penguins to become familiar with their names. Then the students moved to the purple carpet for my reading lesson plan. Since the teacher was not there I could not show the book or my PowerPoint on the screen. I had to improvise, and sat in front of the class and read the story. Once I walked through the words that were highlighted in the story which happened to be some of their spelling test words I read the story once. Second time I had the students act out the different characters in the story since it was play. After we read the story …show more content…
A teacher’s role is important to the students both academically and also in dealing with social learning. Such as addressing the missing pencil and the teasing of others. Also a teacher must be a person that can be flexible and react in many situations. This was reflected when the teacher was absent and having to lead the students with the Principle. In addition, having to improvise while presenting the lesson plan. With the teacher being absent, this gave me an opportunity to determine if teaching first grade was the right age for me and how comfortable I presented myself in front of the
