In reading, Ashley’s interest in reading is increasing. Clearly, she desires books that have a realistic plotline and discuss heavy-hearted issues. She is able to notice the how an author uses craft to enhance her own writing. I will never forget the moment when after we finished reading, “Owl Moon” by Jane Yolen; Ashley said, “Wow, that book was just so beautiful. The words were poetic.” From that moment on, Ashley has incorporatated Jane Yolen’s use of figurative language in each of her writing pieces. Ashley has become an important mentor for others during writing workshop as she independently leads students led revision conferences. While Ashley activity uses her writing toolkit for support, she should reference the checklists and mentor pieces with a close eye before moving on. She enjoys reading all types of books from adventure books, nonfiction books about historical disasters, cookbooks, and books with strong girl characters. Louise's reading notebook reflects the consistent effort she applies to improving her reading skills each day.
