4. Yes, it is likely that there will be competitive exclusion between the fish and ducks. Competitive exclusion does not only mean that one species is killed off it also means that it can “also result in two species sharing different parts of a niche”(pg.249). The ducks and fish don’t share the same ecological niche which is “the part of the environment that a species uses to survive and reproduce”(pg.248). This is also proven by the fact that it states in the textbook that “the fish use a different part of the habitat’s resources than the ducks”(pg.248). Although the ducks and fish share the same habitat they do not share the same niche. These points and the evidence shows that it is likely that there will be competitive …show more content…
This type of symbiosis is called commensalism. The mites get their food by eating the dead skin cells and oils that are released by our skin. This is commensalism because “a relationship in which one organism benefits and the other organism neither benefits nor is harmed”(pg.250). The organism that benefits are the mites as shown by the text “the mites benefit from the relationship by eating dead skin cells and oils released by your skin”(pg.251). The organism that is unaffected is us which is noted in the text “You are not harmed, nor does this benefit you”(pg.251). All of these facts show that this type of symbiosis is …show more content…
The main difference between parasitism and predation is that in one of these words the organism does not die it is slowly drained of energy. Predation is when “one organism captures and feeds upon another organism”(pg.250). This is completely different from parasitism which “is a relationship in which one species benefits and the other is harmed”(pg.250). One of the differences is that in predation “the organism captures and feeds upon another organism”(pg.250) while in parasitism the parasite does not have to kill its organism to feed upon it. Also, in parasitism, the parasite doesn’t want its host to die, so it only takes as much as the host can take so it won’t die along with the host. While the organism in predation just kills the other organism in an instant and eats it. All of these points show how parasitism and predation are
