Description of Student A: Abby
Prior Learning
Abby’s prior knowledge of multiplication of fractions is limited because this is not introduced until the 4th grade. The student was able to get the first two problems on the pre-assessment correct which asked the students to find the missing value that would make the equation true when multiplying. The student does not understand the concept of unit fractions or the relationships between multiplying fractions and repeated addition.
Academic Ability
Abby is working on her multiplication facts but is behind compared to the other students. The students are supposed to get 80 multiplication facts correct when timed for two minutes by the end of 4th grade. She currently gets 48 correct which is below benchmark.
Personal Background …show more content…
Her mother tries to help Abby as much as possible. Abby had a state report a few weeks ago and her mother came to the school to support Abby when she presented the report to the class.
Other Relevant Characteristics
Abby also struggle with decoding words which makes reading difficult depending on the text. She gets distracted during class which takes time away from her completing her assignments. Her name is usually on the board for many missing assignments. Even if she is getting one-on-one help from me or the teacher, she gets distracted by her surroundings.
Influence on Teaching
I will be accommodating Abby by reading the word problems as a class which will help her understand the text. Abby will have an opportunity to express her journal responses verbally. She will also receive one-on-one help from me to ensure she understands the concepts taught in each lesson.
