While reading, I often times found myself being thankful my culture is different. Then I realized my culture isn’t so different. Yes, women have more freedom in America compared to China during the time of the novel, but women are still subjects to a lot of oppression. An extreme example would be rape. There have been more sexual assaults on campus recently and, to my knowledge, there are a few which are not being reported. When the females do speak up, they are told not to report the sexual assault because there isn’t enough proof and it would be a waste of time. Those ideas being, as previously stated, developing a close relationship with my client and forming a trusting bond. Snow Flower and the secret Fan highlighted how a strong bond between two people can be therapeutic and that is basically what a counseling relationship is. Also, the novel highlighted unsafe beauty practices that were used and this applies to today’s society as well. Unsafe beauty practices are still implemented; they are in a different form. Finally, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan teaches the lesson not to judge a book by its cover which holds true in counseling sessions as well.
