This assessment is a formative assessment because the information that we collected will not be used for a grade but to help the instructor determine where the students’ weaknesses are within spelling. I personally conducted several of these inventories and found that the students’ skill levels varied tremendously. This assessment was scored so the teacher could determine the spelling stage the student was in but was not collected as a grade. The work that was collected shows that each student is clearly on separate levels. With these spelling inventories, students can now be divided into small groups where they can work with words that are on their level. This not only helps the lower level students with words that they can master in a reasonable time but it also allows the upper level students to use words that will challenge them but would be almost impossible for the lower level groups to
