Gender norms have been altered throughout time. Gender norms have molded society; how it works and how it evolves. Today’s society is more accepting yet gender still plays an important role in the world. Many people believe that equality has been realized and that gender no longer needs to be addressed. I believe that, in some situations, gender discrimination is still alive and impacts people’s lives with relationships, family, and career. It is known that gender norms differ from one locale to another. No one can assume that what happens in their country is the same for another. It was discovered that the number of employed mothers had increased 11% from 1960 as more families relied on the second income to support their children. Six of ten married couples with children relied on a dual income (Cohen, 2013). There were definitely different view on work. The female interviewee talked about how her mother always had stereotypical female jobs such as a cashier or secretary. However, she did talk about how her mother had always told her not to limit herself and that she could be anything she put her mind to. The younger male interview talked about how his mother broke through many stereotypes. He explained how his mother took on challenging positions. He could not lay his finger on why he thought the way he did. He also could not clarify if this is the way he truly felt or if it was something implanted in him from his father. He talked about how his father struggled to provide for their family, but yet is was great always having his mother home. He talked about how equality, mainly women in the workplace, ruined society for men. He told about how there are not enough jobs in the world for everyone, let alone letting women take jobs that men should have. He stressed that if a woman is going to do the job of a man, then she better be able to do it completely and successfully. He did not argue that women working was a bad thing, just that society would be better off if they did not land the power jobs and forget how to be women or allow a man to take care of his
