Genetics is the process of inheritance of traits from parents to offspring, including the molecular structure and function of genes. Epigenetics is a new discipline in which the word “epi” means above that is epigenetics means above genetics or the control above genes. Aaron et al., defined “Epigenetics as a bridge between genotype and phenotype- a phenomenon that changes the final outcome of a locus or chromosome without changing the underlying DNA sequence” [1]. Epigenetic gene regulation involves changes other than to the sequence of DNA. Epigenetics is a recent discipline in biological and medical sciences and it had changed many beliefs about the biological mechanisms and processes. The research from the past decade has made a major shift in our understanding about the inheritance and progression of …show more content…
Strong epigenetic components have been found which lead to the progression of disease. Researchers have claimed that epigenetics serve as a mechanism of disease action and progression for most of the psychiatric disorders. There are a number of evidences for this as reviewed by Stahl, 2010 [2]. Majority of scientific community have a common understanding now that epigenetic force is the major force responsible for the progression of a number of diseases. However a good news is that the treatment for them is possible as these epigenetic mechanisms are found to be reversible [3,4]. Being reversible it is assessed that research should be done on drug development in order to understand the new possible ways for designing and developing the drugs that have the potential of reversing epigenetic diseases. It is assumed that the development of such drugs if happen to be possible may act as potential therapeutics for psychiatric illnesses. That possibly will be the birth of new generation
