As a result of intense research and hard work, psychologists have made many advances at our current understanding of the human mind. Schizophrenia is one of the most heavily researched mental disorders and as a result of many years of research, scientists have found evidence to support that there may be a genetic basis for schizophrenia. In example, adoption studies have shown that children who were adopted by someone who developed schizophrenia were less likely to suffer from the disorder than those adopted children whose biological parents were diagnosed with schizophrenia. Another important discovery was of how abnormal brain function and anatomy increases the chances to develop a mental illness.
