There are three varieties for this particular species and they're divided according to color. There's the Red Headed Gouldian, the Black Headed Gouldian and the Yellow Headed Gouldian. As for telling which of the species is male or female, you just have to look at the brilliance of the color - males have more striking colors. Males also have longer central tail feathers.

At the very least, you need a cage with a great deal of space for them to fly around. The minimum would be a space of 2 foot by 2 foot by 2 foot. After taking care of that, you can go with any design for your bird cage.
The most common housing is made of metal but you can purchase a higher quality kind made of wood. Since finches are generally small birds, you need the bar space of the cage to be ½ inch at the most.
Seed is the primary food in Gouldian finches' diets. A good mix of seeds will be enough for nourishment but if you want to balance the diet of your pet, you can also provide the Gouldian finch with greens like watercress, lettuce or fresh spinach.
This variety of birds has a large tendency to get fat with overfeeding. But that is not enough reason not to give them a balanced diet by adding calcium through cuttlebone which you can buy from your local pet store.
The main threats to a Gouldian's health are egg binding and air sac mites. With egg binding, this is a problem that affects female Gouldian when they attempt to lay eggs. Eggs can get stuck in the birth canal and unable to pass through it. This will result in weakening of the bird and you need the immediate attention of a veterinarian for this
