Emotional aspects of grief are easily guessable, which entail feelings of sadness, longing, loneliness, frustration and anger (DeSpelder and Strickland, 2015), all of which are felt by Holly; notably anger and frustration, in one example, in which she yells at God for taking away her husband at such a young age. Physical aspects of grief include frequent sighing, sleep disruptions, changes in appetite, and chills/tremors. (DeSpelder and Strickland, 2015) Although it is difficult to say that Holly did not in fact experience any of these symptoms, none of these were displayed in the movie. Behavioral aspects of grief include crying, searching for the deceased, incessant talk about the deceased and circumstances of death, restlessness,…
Guilt and shame in The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne are demonstrated through a myriad of symbols in addition to the ignominious scarlet letter. One such symbol is the scaffold on which Hester is sentenced to wear her sign of adultery. The scaffold serves to reveal the inner thoughts that many of the major characters keep concealed most prominently, Arthur Dimmesdale. The scaffold presents itself in three scenes throughout the novel, and with each scene, Dimmesdale’s feelings of remorse and guilt are increasingly demonstrated. These scaffold scenes all help to interpret the depth of guilt and pain that tortures Dimmesdale’s soul, and thereby assists Hawthorne’s development of his character.…
Sympathy in The Scarlet Letter The Scarlet Letter is a novel composed of several underlying meanings and connections to the author, Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hawthorne, born in the early 1800s, utilizes his families Puritan rich ancestry and his strong female role models, including his mother, to further enhance his writing. These personal connections of Hawthorne directly correlate to not only the meaning of the word sympathy, but also to who Hawthorne persuades the reader to feel sympathetic for.…
Sins or lapses of judgment tend to have a large grasp on the control of how a person chooses to live their life. However, these sins can be redeemed in light of the fact that humans have an innate sense of selfishness and rebellion. Forgiveness and redemption can either come from a higher, omnipotent source or it can come from within. That is the topic proposed in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter.…

His view of human nature was that it was full of evil and was expressed in “Young Goodman Brown” a short story which was written in 1835. He used pride as an example of man’s evil nature. “Worrying does not take away tomorrows troubles, it takes away todays peace.” (Randy Armstrong) Worry is an epidemic that haunts my mind, clouds my thoughts, keeps me awake at night. Not unlike Hester Prynne I too would have been labeled with the letter: A. however unlike The Scarlet Letter’s main character it does not stand for Adultery, it stands for anxiety, a state of mind that causes me to worry about the silliest things. I was never diagnosed for any specific anxiety disorder, I’m not OCD, although I can have OCD tendencies, I don’t have PTSD, and I’ve never had to see any doctors or therapists about my issues.…

Grief has a process of five stages which can be long not everyone goes through them, but usually most people do. Being part of this process leads us to stage number one in this step the article counters that people in his stage encounter denial in which shock and numbness the person may disguise the pain of their loss, this feelings may also occur when death is expected, but more likely to last longer if death is unexpected(“Depression”). The reaction of people to this may be like “This isn't happening.” or “This can't be happening.” This shows their overwhelming emotions and denial to what's currently happening to them.…
Judgement, especially lasting judgement is not something that should ever be passed lightly. In both the book “The Scarlet Letter,” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and the book “Beloved,” by Toni Morrison, the main characters are harshly and lastingly judged by their peers. In The Scarlet Letter, this is displayed through the citizens of Hester’s village when they utterly reject her and scorn her at the Scaffold and for the next four to six years. Similarly, upon the slaughter of her child, Sethe was also isolated and shunned by everyone who lived in her little town. Basically, both of these women were made into outcasts for much longer periods than necessary for thing that they had done in the past.…
