The virus was first identified in Mexico in 2009. It became known as swine flu because the virus closely resembled known influenza viruses that cause illness in pigs. In February 2009, a young boy in Veracruz fell ill with H1N1. Within weeks, 30% of the town’s residents had been affected by a similar sickness, and it spreads to nearby villages. He represented the first documented case known as “patient zero.” By mid-March a similar sickness emerged in Mexico City, and then cases of the respiratory illness were reported throughout the country. After several infected persons died, the health officials decided to send samples to a lab in Canada for analysis.
