Romeo was challenged by Tybalt to a fight. Mercutio is suggesting he step in for Romeo instead because he wants to help out his friend. “O calm, dishonourable, vile submission! ‘Alla stoccata’ carries it away. Tybalt you rat-catcher, will you walk?” (Shakespeare 35) Mercutio is so loyal to Romeo that he is willing to fight for him. Romeo needed help, so Mercutio stepped in and did just that. Friends who really care and are loyal to the other will do the unthinkable to help one another out because when you’re loyal to someone you'll do anything. Romeo and Mercutio were joking around and Mercutio thinks this is better for Romeo to do than mope around. Mercutio thinks Romeo looks funny crying over love and he should joke around more. “Why, is not this better now than groaning for love? Now art thou sociable, now art thou Romeo; now art what thou art, by art as well as by nature. For this drivelling love is like a great natural, that runs lolling up and down to hide his bauble in a hole.” (Shakespeare 27) Romeo and Mercutio have a friendship where they can joke around with each other, but still learn things from their jokes. Mercutio still manages to make fun of Romeo and give him advice at the same time. In relationships you want to be able to joke around with one another, but you want to learn from each other as well.
