It is most common for Hidradenitis Suppurativa to occur where there is hair (with oil and sweat glands) and where the skin rubs together. Although no one is quite sure why the blockage happens, they are aware of some of the factors that may take part in it. These are smoking, metabolic syndrome, an irregular immune system response, excess weight, and hormones. It cannot be transmitted through sexual activity and is not contagious. It is not caused by poor hygiene or infections (Symptoms).
Hidradenitis Suppurativa does have some risk factors. Women have a significantly higher chance at having this condition compared to men, people can even inherit it. This can be related with many other conditions, such as diabetes,metabolic syndrome, severe acne, obesity, Crohn’s disease, and inflammatory bowel disease. With this said, it has also been connected to smoking tobacco. Another factor is your age. It usually affects women in their 20’s (ages 20-29) (Symptoms).
There are possible complications that come with having Hidradenitis Suppurativa. These include being more likely to have infections and even cancer, however that is rare. It also may cause social isolation due to embarrassment, it can even lead to depression, restricted movement, and scars and skin changes
