The Reichstag fire was the event that kicked off the events that led to Hitler taking complete power over Germany. The Reichstag fire in February 27th 1933, was an intentionally set fire on the Reichstag building that made the tables turn for Hitler as he had been losing popularity in recent elections of November 1932 with “a 31.1% drop of votes.” (Lacey, Shepard,). Van der Lubbe was blamed for the fire as a communist plot against the Nazis. 4000 communist leaders were arrested as a result of this (Lacey, Shepard, 63). On the weekend of the 29th to the 30th of June, the SS broke into the homes of leading figures of the SA including Röhm the leader of the SA and were arrested and killed. Hitler was responsible for the attacks because he thought and Justified that he did it because Röhm was plotting against against Hitler to overthrow him and take power over the Nazis. This happened because Hitler always feared that he couldn't control the SA and he used as many sources say, the excuse of them plotting against him to get rid of them. “He is betraying all of us” (Röhm as found in 72). This shows that Hitler was a man who betrayed anyone and would mind doing with Röhm in the Night of the Long Knives. The night of the Long Knives was not a result of the reichstag fire because there is no link between Hitler and went in to kill his own members and the Reichstag building going up in flames.
