The modern conflict between the Arabs and the Israelites as explained in the book had their beginnings in the early 1900’s with the Balfour Declaration as Britain promoted the idea of a Jewish homeland in Israel. This brought much uncertainty as many groups other than Palestine and Israel were watching to see what moves would be made. When a party begins, everyone is welcome to join and will come, and the Gordis family could sense this in the people they came to meet. The conflict which continues to rage on is affecting families and children and communities. It can be hard to grasp as an American all that the people experience in that part of the world, especially where we deal with racial conflicts here in the United States that thankfully have not led to the violence found in Israel. These ethnic conflicts are found all over the world, and one has to wonder what the future holds for the younger generations as they are raised in these hostile environments.
