In fifth grade, I started taking riding lessons. Once a week, I went to a nice barn to learn how to stay on top of a horse, and I learned how to braid a mane and tail and how to take apart and put together a bridle. When I entered middle school, I entered a new side of the horse world. My neighbor, who owned the horse with a huge head, still had horses and I quickly began to learn how different horses could be kept.…
The feeling of reins in hand and a hard saddle under you, making your everything ache after a successful and long day, is to die for. The smell of sweat and dirt, mixed with the feeling of success, is what one wants. Seeing the ground bob up and down, more than five feet below you, and not being afraid, is quite a sight. There is no other bond quite like horse and rider.…
I have spent most of my life surrounded by horses, cows, and goats. I have been stepped on, thrown off horses, penned up against gates, had surgery, traveled to different states, I am even on TV and have more pieces of flesh missing from my legs than I care to remember. It is just how rodeo is there are risks every time someone steps into the rodeo arena. I have many all-around titles and various awards from rodeo. I also have my own personal trainer that I go to, to help me with competing.…
Where western horses are typically laid back, saddle seat horses always want to be moving once they are in the show ring. Having a bond with your horse is a good idea. Lindsay Shearman says “In the circuit it’s very important. You usually only show one horse the whole season or one horse per division if you're lucky enough to afford multiple mounts of that level. You’re usually the only person to show that horse, unless your trainer needs to enter it for training purposes.…
Being an equine trainer is no easy job. I think that is half the reason I am so drown to it. Training animals that weigh half a ton is inherently dangerous and challenging (careerbuilder). I am really not looking forward to getting bucked off or bitten, especially when I am particularly busy. I could be busy with the actual training, attending shows, or selling horses that I have trained (study.com/articles).…

I’d been interested in horsemanship for a long time, but I never had access to stables. So I was delighted to learn that Susan was an accomplished rider and that she could teach me how to ride. The first time I got on a horse, I felt dizzy. Sitting stiffly, I held too tightly to the horse because I was afraid of falling. Susan corrected my posture patiently and was encouraging throughout our lessons.…
Horseback riding in its disciplines it is definitely one of the hardest sports. As a rider one has to feel the movements of the horse underneath them and understand what each means. Riders have to control their horses with shifts of body weight, leg positioning, and touches of rein, if one part of the body moves incorrectly they are telling the horse to do something entirely incorrect and could end up on the ground. Try doing that going 30 MPH around barrels, scary but exciting.…
A hippo isn’t just a huge water mammal that lives in Africa, it’s also Greek for horse. Horses in the wild live in herds, but nowadays they rely on humans for their survival; this can change some of their characteristics. I’ve realized in my lifetime that saddling a horse that you are going to ride is not as natural of an act to other people as it is to me. Since the moment I had both the strength and height to lift my own tiny saddle up to the back of my animal, I was saddling by myself. These days in the time that I set aside to ride, I don’t even think about the act of saddling, I could almost finish the act blindfolded. In my realization that not all people know how to saddle a horse and if they have an idea it may not be the proper way, I decided to share my knowledge in this area with others.…
