In our experiment, we are testing the affects sodium has on our blood pressure. If increased amounts of sodium are added to plain spaghetti noodles, will that increase blood pressure? If 7 grams of sodium is introduced to plain noodles and consumed, then the person 's systolic and diastolic reading will increase dramatically, when blood pressure is a function of sodium. This is our hypothesis. We predict that when we take the blood pressure of our test subjects after eating the noodles with 7 grams of salt, it will rise to 160 or higher over 100 or higher. Our independent variable is different amounts of sodium introduced to noodles. The different amounts of sodium added are: 1 gram, 3 grams, 5 grams, and 7 grams. We used iodized …show more content…
Very low sodium labels mean 35 mg of sodium per serving. Low sodium means 140 mg or less per serving. High blood pressure affects more than 75 million people in the United States each year (FDA,2015). When blood pressure is taken, it is recorded as two numbers as a fraction. The systolic number is on the top, and the diastolic number is on the bottom. The systolic number measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats.
The diastolic number measures the resting between beats and refilling of blood in the heart muscle. The most attention is given to the systolic number. Normal blood pressure recommended by the American Heart Association is less than 120 over less than 80. Prehypertension is elevated blood blood pressure and is 120-139 over 80-89. Hypertension is stage 1 of high blood pressure and reads 140-159 over 90-99. Hypertension is stage 2 of high blood pressure and reads 160 or higher over 100 or higher. When blood pressure reaches higher than 180 over higher than 110, emergency care is needed …show more content…
The reason it harms the brain is because it harms arteries leading to the brain. The lack of blood reaching the brain as result of the high sodium levels can lead to dementia. Because of this condition, the brain’s cells do not work as efficient. Overtime the damage to the brain can become very severe, and arteries can come completely clogged and burst. When this happens the part of the brain that is receiving the blood will die because of the lack of oxygen. This will result in a stroke and the person will lose that part of the brain and any actions that go along with it
