How do subs rise and sink? It is done with something called the Archimedes Principle. To sink the sub has several different components that have to move. One of them is the Main vent. This is closed while the sub is on the surface. The vent closes when the sub begins to submerge. This allows the air to be let out of the Ballast Tank which fills up with water when the sub submerges. To allow water to flood the …show more content…
Like the process to submerge the same components have to move or allow something in. In the process of surfacing air has to be put into the ballast tanks in order to make the sub lighter than the water. To do this the main vent must be closed. Then air is pumped into the ballast tanks from the pressurized compartment. This then pushes out the water that was in ballast tanks through the flood ports that originally allowed the water in.
Subs may rise and submerge the same, but their purposes can be very different. There are many types of subs and the most well known are probably the Military ones. There are also other types of subs that do sea exploration. These machines help people explore the ocean floor and discover new life and depths not reachable by divers. The common sub for these explorations is commonly known as the submersible.
Another sub would be a recreational submarine. They are used for as you have maybe guessed recreation. They like the midget sub or submersible are used for some underwater research purposes as well. First created by Graham Hawkes in the 1970s, these types of submarines were initially utilized as naval vessels.
