Most winter sports seem kind of nuts. You can just picture the wintertime boredom that persuaded people to strap planks of wood to their feet, or slide down ice face first. Although typical sports like skiing and luge are now professional sports, there are far more crazy winter activities out there. Here are a few of the winter sports from around the world you need to try.
Yukigassen (-- removed HTML --)
Who doesn’t love a good snowball fight? Well, the Japanese have taken this childhood pastime to a whole other level. Yukigassen, or snow battle, is true warfare. 90 snowballs, two teams, 14 players. Similar to capture the flag, players aim to collect the opponents’ flag and are out if they are hit with a snowball.
Skijoring …show more content…
One very brave skier is towed by a snowmobile, dirt bike, dogs, or horse and, like waterskiing, mixes in jumps and slaloms along a course. Watch out for people trying this out this winter. It’s only a matter of time before it catches on outside of Europe. Who needs a mountain?
Ice climbing (-- removed HTML --)
Do you love rock climbing but just wish the surface was a bit colder and extra slippery? Then ice climbing is perfect for you! During the winter, these athletes climb frozen waterfalls or ice covered rock facades. Together with their axes and crampons these climbers put simple rock climbing to shame.
Ice sailing (-- removed HTML --)
Extremely popular in places like Austria and Germany, ice sailing puts the wind in your sails all year long. Instead of a boat, imagine a bobsled balanced on bladed runners attached to a large sail. This one-person apparatus allows the driver to whip around the ice in the winter months. It’s kind of like skating with less physical effort.
