There are many approaches to organizational communication that have been studied throughout history. While there has been something to learn from each new era of organizational structure, there is no perfect approach. In deciding which approach is most appropriate for a specific organization, one must look at the organizational goals and needs to decide. The first theory is Blake and Mouton’s Managerial Grid which was published in 1964. By using this grid, it allows managers to be assigned a rating on each dimension (Roberson 2005). In modern organizational communication this theory is now known as the Leadership Grid and has had significant impact on organizational structure. This tool was developed to better train different types of leadership styles for managers. The main goal of this development was it increase efficiency as well as employee satisfaction and creativity. As noted previously, many of the theories and approaches are influenced from other approaches. In the case of the management/leadership grid, Mouton and Blake took aspects from classical management and human relations and combined to form a more efficient style. They placed a high importance on concern for people as well as concern for production. They created a grid that gauged leadership styles based on level of concern for people versus production. In the grid, there are five prototypical management styles. The first is impoverished management which is characterized by a low concern for people and a low concern for production.
