Hunger
Many cannot go one day about food and complain how hungry they are. However, does one really understand what being “hungry” really is? Most people do not have to worry about starving every day, but there are people who do. According to the Merriam – Webster dictionary, hunger is defined as "A very great need for food; a severe lack of food; an uncomfortable feeling in your stomach that causes the need with food."(Webster Inc.) Many lack the knowledge how hunger effects people. The thought of people that could be in our very own community, or even a person in the same classroom sitting across you, could be lacking food that they so desperately need. However, there is a solution that could solve this. There's many ways such as participating in food drives, raising money, and even teaching students to be aware of this problem so they can give back to the community and even go further to help Third World countries by teaching and providing the materials need for them to plant and grow their own food. A single person to make a huge difference just by spreading awareness. Knowing these facts and statistics can help and make a change to help the hunger. Many are very unaware of the fact how close hunger is too us. It is all around even next to us. This is why knowledge of this issue can greatly impact this issue in the most positive of ways. Hunger can kills more people than malaria, AIDS, and tuberculosis combined. Just about 3.1 million children die each year due to them being hungry. Other than death, hunger has long term effects that especially impact kids. Based on research done by The World Technology Network found that “malnutrition at an early age leads to reduced physical and mental development during childhood. Iodine deficiency, the same report shows, is the world's greatest single cause of mental retardation and brain damage and 50 percent of pregnant women in developing countries are iron deficient. Iron deficiency is directly tied to hemorrhage at childbirth.” ("The WTN Global Challenges Program") It is very clear that hunger can be a problem before a child is even born, that will still persist later on for that child. During birth to the early adulthood, is when the brain is most active. This is the time period where a child's body and mind drastically changes and develops the most essential things for a person to function. When a child is hungry they would be lacking the nutrition they need for the brain to function and for the body to grow.
