Identifying Jake’s Characteristics A good development of the characters is crucial to any story’s success. When reading the short story “Love in L.A.”, by Dagobeta Gilb, I saw the importance of the characters and how they shape the outcome of the story. It is also important to notice the characteristics of the protagonist because it connects with the event of the story. The narrator can as well show the character’s personality in descriptive tone as well as the narration of the story. The main character, Jake has several personality that shows why the event happen. In the beginning of the story, I see that the author describe Jake as a dreamer. I understand this by Jakes manner and thoughts when he is sitting in his car. His way of thought is similar to a younger person who pursue a life desire, like the stereotype of most men, are cars and freedom. He was nonchalant about the entire matter. He approach the driver of the Toyota stating that his car did not even had a scratch on it. He did not realized that her car had any damages until he looked at the back of it. Even with that he tried to sweep it by inviting her for breakfast, but she did not accept. Knowingly, he told her that he had insurance but he did not. Even the license plate he had on his car was one he found in a junkyard.
