Assignment 2
Task 1: Working of Microsoft Kinect 3D Camera
Kinect is a motion sensing input device developed by Microsoft for Xbox 360 and other gaming consoles. It enables users to control and interact with their console without the need of a game controller. It uses a natural interface using gestures and spoken commands.
Microsoft developed a system that can interpret specific gesture, thus making hands-free control of devices by using an infrared projector, camera and a microchip to track movement of objects and individuals in three dimensions.
There are three other hardware components working within the Kinect sensor:
Color VGA video camera (RGB Camera): This video camera …show more content…
If a gear part brakes or wears out; it can be scanned with the help of Kinect camera. With the help of computer software, its 3D mesh will be generated and it can be sent to a 3D printer which will print the desired part. By using this technique, one can manufacture a part immediately. This can save a lot of time and cost compared to traditional manufacturing.
2) Medical application of 3D scanning: Kinect can be used to model hearing aids. Scanning of ear of an individual can be done using Kinect and with the help of computer software and 3D printer; hearing aids can be manufactured.
Orthopedic cast: Scanning of a fractured limb can be done with the help of Kinect and results can be used to design a cast.
3) Kinect can be used in physiotherapy to instruct patients regarding the exercises. It can provide instant feedback to therapist and patients. The Kinect camera can track whole body movement, hence it becomes difficult for the patient to cheat. There is no need to attach any devices to the
