Over the years, the healthcare in the U.S. has struggled with how to maintain patient health information and how to keep it safe and private. The HIM (Health Information Management) industry can be traced back to the 1920s, when healthcare professionals realized that patient caring would be more effective for both the provider and the patient. Documentation became popular and was used throughout the U.S. after healthcare providers realized that it was impossible to treat the patient and have accurate medical history without documenting the treatments.
