As a teacher, I now find it difficult to observe issues in my classroom or around the school without attempting to find a solution. Part of being an effective teacher is having the ability to reflect on current teaching practices and employ strategies with the intention of improving the teaching practice (Mertler, 2014, 13). Now that I have had experience researching ways to improve instruction for my students, I feel that it is imperative that I continue the action research process. My goal as a teacher is to provide the best education possible to the students I teach. If there is an issue within my classroom or instruction, it is my job to fix it. Most of the time this will consist of reading literature, reflecting on my current practices, and making changes to my future practices. The results of my study will directly impact students who are about to go into the world and make a change. My students will be graduating in less than two months. These will be the future leaders, doctors, lawyers, and thinkers of America. They have the potential to be these people only if they believe in themselves. Writing seems to be an issue not only for my students, but students across the U.S. Many believe that they can’t write, that writing is stupid, and it won’t be used in the “real world”. They can’t be any further from the truth. Writing is a 21st century skill that is essential to being successful in whatever post-secondary atmosphere students find themselves in. This study helped provide many students with confidence about their ability to write. The impact we have on students’ confidence will have a ripple effect on to another area where they feel less confident. Empowering students to try something that they wouldn’t otherwise try can potentially impact so many. Perhaps, students will consider going to community college or teaching others to feel confident in their abilities. They might even consider trying to find a cure for cancer. Regardless of the effect, social change can begin from the smallest act. This study provided students with proof that they are capable of writing. I can only imagine what else they might do as a result of the confidence
