Abstract:
Biodiversity is the variety and variability of living organisms, including their species richness in an environment. It is a major component of environment and useful for all living organisms including man. Biodiversity plays important role in regulation of climate. Biodiversity is a major part of life-support system. It is particularly ecological, economic, spiritual, cultural, and aesthetic importance. Although the benefits from biodiversity, present causes to species and ecosystem diversity are the greatest recorded in recent period. All these threats are caused by overconsumption and mismanagement of the biological resources, pollution, misguided governmental …show more content…
At present, in world the total number of plant and animal species are 1,263,500. In India, while India has only 51,828 species. It provides all the basic requirements of life of all living things. Biodiversity plays a direct role in climate regulation and it depends upon evolutionary changes of the species. Human beings derive great enjoyment from natural environment. Man exploited more resources with the help of his skill and knowledge and enrich the culture. At present, uncontrolled use of resources, urban and industrial expansion and problems of pollution causes more threats to the biological diversity (Parmesan, 2006),. Sustainable utilization and development of biological resources are the urgent need that meets the needs of the current generation without compromising the ability of future generations. A balance between the environment and developmental activities results to sustainable development which ensures biodiversity conservation (Mutia, …show more content…
ii) Maintain Quality of Air: Plants are the regulators of oxygen. They play role in purifying air maintain atmospheric composition of air. They use CO2 through the photosynthesis process and release O2 in atmosphere. The seas, plants and soil are the major sinks of carbon; they help to reduce CO2 in atmosphere.
iii) Conservation of Water resources: Trees and forest are the main regulators of temperature balance and hydrological cycle. They hold soil firmly and control soil erosion and helps in recharging the groundwater.
iv) Maintenance of earth’s temperature: Trees maintain atmospheric humidity and controls the temperature of earth. It also helps in controlling the rate of evaporation of water. The seas, plants and soil are the major sinks of carbon; they help to reduce CO2 in atmosphere. The rainforests maintain surface temperature and in cold regions the temperature is regulated by forests acting as insulators and windbreaks.
v) Prevention and mitigation of natural disasters: The natural Ecosystems prevents the problems of soil erosion, nutrient loss, landslides, floods, cyclones and
