First, an effective speech has to have a strong opening. The opening of a speech helps people understand what is going to be discussed. In an excerpt from Institutio Oratoria by Quintilian, the beginning of a speech, “…became the practice to use prooimiom of what is said before one enters on the real matter.” An effective speech has a clear preview of what will be said, so that the audience is not confused while listening to the speech. Next, an effective speech should have the characteristic of “a narrative… is speech instructing the hearer on what is in dispute.” A effective speech will have a story line or a plot that has a beginning, middle and end. Composition II, helped me to develop my effective writing style. One of our essay that we had to write was an argumentative essay. In my essay “Arguing from Experience”, I wrote an effective argument on how “…hard work is satisfying because it can benefit individuals in… ways that can be self-rewarding.” It was an effective argument because I used ethos, logos, and pathos throughout my argument. I used ethos by establishing my credibility, I did not use higher diction when I wrote the essay and I did not use slang. I established credibility through my diction, sounding educated with explanations that are made out in simple terms. I used pathos to appeal to my audience emotions, relating my life and the lives of many others to hard work. Finally, I used logos to reason how hard work can be self-rewarding, with evidence from different novels. Not only did I used effective writing in my composition II course, but I have also used effective speech when I presented PowerPoint presentations in courses. In a social psychology class, I had completed a presentation on a specific type of social addiction. I effectively spoke on how “social media offers people a way to feel that sense of belonging whenever and wherever.” I believe I made an effective speech because I have enough evidence to back up all my points in my presentation.
