The question that arises is ‘Can the machine produce the work of art ‘? It probably can ,if it follows certain considerations that are usually neglected in industrial art such as size, association and most importantly ornament must fit form and function. In this way machine can still meet the old fashioned ornamentation in its products with precision and appropriateness. Victorians were highly inspired to reproduce carved works which were fusion of art and mechanics. But it was removed from the market because furniture manufactures feared the availability of cheap carved products and carving would lose its value .But a lot of alternatives were used for hand carving such as stamped out leather and wood work. After industrialization textile industry boomed as patterned cloth became widely available in the market . Textile industry was able to provide large scale employment.” The average production of hand-block printing , was about 6 pieces (168 yards)per day ,whereas machine could produce 200 to 500 pieces (5000 to 4000 yards) per day”(David greysmith ,Design and industry1980,p65).The use of chemical dye became popular compared to the traditional use of vegetable dyes.Potter s wheel was a trademark of handmade ceramics while use of mould is the trademark of Industrial production. Drawings weren’t new post industrialization but where used only when the process was unusual. As the sophistication of the industrial organization increased need for technical drawings were essential to control the complex production process. It was a shift from the concentration on the aesthetic aspect of the product to the more technical aspect of the product; as precision was an important factor to keep the products standardized. It also simplified the division of labour in the complex process of making the product.During the pre-industrialization there weren’t specialist designers or a craft design process or elaborate technical drawings .It was craftsperson working with the appropriate material independently in a particular fashion that he had learned to follow that particular design. The form of the finished product was the record of how objects of that kind needs to be formed. But post industrialization due to the factory system of production the craftsperson was no longer a independently involved in making of the craft. He was not allowed or able to communicate with the client directly or take design decisions on his own. This responsibility of communicating with the client and understanding their needs and incorporating them in the product had to be done by someonelese. The activity of design did play a major role in the industrial process.
