The Story is written and takes place in the 1800’s. This is a time when people really didn’t marry for love. The setting that Jane Austen is in makes her ideas very different than most women of her time. “Anything is preferred or endured rather than marry without affection” (Austen pg. 915). She is telling her niece, in a very loving tone, that she should marry for love. This was a very uncommon thing to do back in the 1800’s in England. Setting is a very important factor in “Shooting an Elephant “. The story takes place in Burma in the 1920’s. This story is told during a time when Burma was under British control. The mood in the country isn’t very friendly towards British officers. “They did not like me but with the magical rifle in my hand I was memorizing to watch” (Orwell pg.1322). Even though he was a British officer, they still needed someone to kill the elephant. The setting is most important here because the shooting of the elephant represents the British Empire dying very and painfully slow
