The setting in this case is Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. Already, it can be seen how the setting will influence the the culture and community and vice versa. The area of Salem had a large number of Puritans hence Puritanism dominated the community. This affected the way people and women were treated and looked at in the community. Also, the year is 1692, a little more than 300 years ago. This means that the culture was also much different from now because of the time. The culture of the area is a tremendous factor in this story. In The Crucible, the men of religious order decided and took part in many of the decisions. Also, you have to remember at this time men held most of the top positions. So, the judges were also men and so were many of the accusers. Those accused of witchcraft happened to be young women; maidens as they were called. Also, one of the accused was Tituba, a black lady from Barbados who was seen as an outsider. Tituba was seen as an outsider and perhaps not to be trusted because almost all of the community was white. It is important to understand that communities of people naturally see one who is very different from the mass as an outsider, it’s just human nature and instinct. Tituba was questioned with force and assumed to have been practicing witchcraft, which actually turned out to be true. That is another example of how the …show more content…
Setting has had an influence on me of course. I am from North Jersey, an area with diverse cultures. I am Italian-American and that greatly influences my family and what we do together. On holidays, my family gets together at one of our houses and we eat together and talk together all night. That is how culture influences us and what we do. Geography influences how you look as well. Look around the world, each continent and area has very different appearances. I think it is a good thing to know that we are all different and have our own cultures and values that each of us hold dear. It is good to see people as different and having different cultures rather than just lumping everyone together as the same. It’s the differences that make everyone unique. To the point of why geography matters is because is makes us who we are. People from different areas have different accents too and have different ways they dress. I am proud to be from North Jersey and an Italian-American because it makes me who I
