His words explain that he is more than just one but he is everybody. He is the face of America and is related to nature. In “Song of Myself” Whitman writes about the different experiences of people and professions he has encountered in his life. He becomes one with these people and therefore, senses a deeper connection with them. With that connection, he develops a feeling of wholeness with himself. For example, in section eleven of the poem Whitman describes a woman watching a group of men bathing in the ocean together. He says, “Twenty-eight young men bathe by the shore, / Twenty-eight young men and all so friendly; / Twenty-eight years of womanly life and all so lonesome.” He writes about how she fantasizes about being with them and wonders the shape of their bodies. Whitman writes this because another form of self is sexuality. Whitman is known for his sexuality and his radical views. He believes that two people engaging in sexual contact are forced as one but also not as one. Whitman means by this is that two people engaging in sexual contact not only are physically involved but also transcend into a far more powerful contact with each
