One of the contributors is overpopulation. Africa’s average growth rate three percent per year, which is higher than any other developing regions. Being a less developed country has also impacted Africa. Between 1970 and 1990, almost half of the world’s less developed countries suffered in shortage of food supply, causing more than a quarter of children to suffer from hunger. Africa is carries twenty-nine of out the thirty-six poorest countries in the world, causing men to migrate in search of a job to maintain his family, leaving the forty percent of women to manage the household in some parts of rural Africa. Another significant contributor to hunger is war, Africa’s government has spent billions of dollars in prepping for war. Africa spends about fourteen billion dollars on weapons and ammunition alone, with the money it takes to build one tank, African government could build one-thousand schools for children. With Africa spending so much money on war, they have accumulated mountains of debt and no way of repaying it. Research has shown that the earth is capable of feeding many more people that are alive today, there has been an estimation that Africa, Asia, and Latin America alone, could feed thirty-five to forty billion people. But in order to feed everyone, help from the World Bank is needed. However there are many concerns, such as food cost fifty to seventy percent of the World Bank’s poverty line income, interrelating poverty and hunger. The World Bank encourages agriculture investment to reduce the impact of poverty and hunger, but instead of trying to administer structural adjustment programs to countries, the World Bank needs to focus on how to make adjustments to its own operations. For example, they need to make adjustments to subject itself and its work to the scrutiny of those same groups who are most affected by its actions and to be responsive and accountable to the poor in whose name it addresses these issues of hunger. The World Bank also needs to admit that their structural adjustment has not helped stop global hunger, which means the Bank should stop trying to administer that potion to countries.
